Hi all,

I have a 1997 Volvo Penta 5.7GL, serial # 572BPLKR.
I've seen conflicting evidence in service manuals as to the correct crankcase capacity.
Does it take 5.2l of oil or 5.7l of oil?
The dipstick has a 'low' mark, a 'safe' mark and an 'M' mark, a considerable amount higher than the 'low' and 'safe'.
Am I right in assuming the 'M' stands for maximum or should the tide level be in the 'safe'?
I need to replace the spin on fuel filter & have seen both 21 micron & 10 micron to suit.
Which is the correct fuel filter/ seperator?
The sticker on my starboard riser states that it needs RV15YC4 Champion plugs.
I'm having trouble finding a locally available plug & have googled that the NGK BR6FS will be suitable.
NGK's are readily available & I can get them for next to nicks... :)

Thanks!

I have a '96 5.7 GL w/ DP....I fill with 6 quarts of 30w synthetic WITH the filter change....as for the fuel/water sep. filter 21 micron is better (finer) than a 10 micron...but I feel that around here in the Northeast United States I need to change the filter 2x a season because of the crappy Ethanol fuel so not as concerned with 21 v. 10 mic. Anyone else? I've also used the Champion plugs--didn't like them...after 1 season I pulled them because I felt some miss-firing and when I wrenched them out 3 of them broke--the insulater that is....cheap plugs! This year I put in a set of MR43T as stated on the motor....so far so good. I'll winterize the boat this weekend and pull a plug to inspect it......

Steve

If my memory service me correct you will take just about 5 Liters which should include the filter capacity. Always in the safe range, not above or below.

As far as the plugs go BR6FS, RV15YC4 or Delco MR43T

Thanks fellas.
Does the lower the micron not mean the finer the filtration? :? :?:
Any idea what the 'M' is for on the dipstick?!

Sorry, but I have to correct you on this part. The engineer in me had too.

"A unit used to measure the effectiveness of filters. One micron is a micrometer, or one millionth of a meter (10−6)."

Would one not want the maximum safe allowable oil in their crankcase i.e. at the 'M' mark? :?: :?

No. Actually a few years back they issues a service bulletin that said oil should be in the safe range, not above or below. They actually had running issues with engines with too much oil in them...witnessed one myself. 1/2 quart of oil too much made the boat top out at 3600 rpms, pulled out a half quart and ran right up to 4500rpms.

On my Toyota 1jzgte turbo engine that revvs to 9k, it's actually recommended to run one quart over "full". On a small block chevy a little bit extra never hurts, but a lot does lol

Correct. A 10 mic' filter will generally filter finer particles than a 21 mic' filter.

boats lean, tip, tilt...etc.... and the oil sloshes around qwite a bit. closer to the top mark is preferred. you wouldnt want it to suck air at higher revs when leaned over in a turn and the oil gets sent to the outside of the pan with the g-force..... Car engines dont move much.
Motorcycle lean over a lot so we always keep the oil level as close to the max line always

that motor should be around 5.25-5.5 quarts without filter replacement. add another 1/2 quart for small filter and 3/4 for larger filter.

but as said before... remove oil and replace filter then dump 5 quarts run for 30 seconds then add till near max line. run again and recheck
