I have a 1994 four winns freedom 170 with a 115hp Johnson outboard. I took it out today and it got going about 37 mph full throttle trimmed up but was very sluggish off the start. The prop is a 14 x 19. There is no way she will be able to pull a skier or a wake boarder. This is with half of tank of gas and no one else in the boat. Should I just try a 14 x 17 or does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jason |

I think you have other issues.... That boat should be capable of mid to high 40's, and still with good hole shot. Check the normal stuff (plugs, wires, filters etc) before changing props. |

Thanks for the reply. I just had the carbs rebuilt and a water seperator installed. The gas cap was leaking so I had water in the gas. I disconected the VRO and mix it 50 to 1 to elimanate any issues down the road with the VRO. I had one that failed in the past, this is why I mix it manually now. I don't trust them any more. I'll do plugs, wires and a fuel filter. Is there any other filter that I should check/change? |

Are you sure that there is no longer any water in the gas? I'd take it off if you can and pour out the gas in a clear container, let it sit and see of water separates out on the bottom. If you have a chronic problem with this you might need to get the gas tank cleaned out, in the meantime you can use a Racor filter with the clear bowl, that will let you see if there is water or sediment in the gas. There are a lot of other things that can cause a lack of proper top end performance, what was your max rpm when you had it wind open? fuel tank vent open fuel lines not collapsing under vaccum? if you use E-10 gas some fuel lines can get soft or delaminate inside. vaccum leaks (gasket between the carb and head) |

There's definitely no water in the gas anymore. I installed a new gas cap(this was where the water was getting in), checked all gas lines and installed a water separator. I'm not sure what the RPM's were because the tack wasn't working. My plan is to fix the tack tomorrow, install new plugs and wires, and put a new fuel filter on. I don't think it's a fuel issue because she ran good. There was no breaking up and it idled ok. After I do all this tomorrow, I'll post back. Is there anything else I should check on the motor or elsewhere? |
