So I removed the starter and I have two broken teeth on the flywheel.
so am I wrong in thinking that the motor needs to come out. Or can it be done in the boat? It doesn't seem possible but figured I would ask.

2 ways. The redneck way, with starter removed, crank the engine by hand with socket on front pulley bolt until flywheel teeth are visible, re-install starter and hope that 2 tooth gap doesn't come around to meet starter again. Or pull engine to replace flywheel. Sorry, but no other way... |

Personally, unless you're going to sell the boat I wouldn't worry. Just keep a socket wrench handy that fits the crank pulley to spin it a hair if you happen to visit that part of the flywheel. Lift engine cover, turn engine a hair, start it and go. no biggie |

Using it with broken teeth on the flywheel is not the best thing to do, temporarily yes, but do you really want to keep spinning the motor over by hand if it lands on the flat spot...and for some reason they seem like they often like to do that! |

I'm going to take the motor out have my builder check the motor over and replace the flywheel. Figured it did it at the ideal time

Do you have to change the whole flywheel nowadays ? At one time, the ring gear on flywheels was replaceable (certainly was on the 1970's and 1980's engines I worked on many years ago !), The new gear just needed to be heated in an oven, put in place on the flywheel and it shrunk on as it cooled. The old one was removed by cutting a shallow slot in between 2 teeth and then hitting it there with a sharp cold chisel; the ring gear cracked, sprung open and was then loose |

Just the gear can be changed, takes 5 minutes start to finish. Use an airhammer and the old one pops right off, use the acetylene torch to heat the new one real good and side it on, when it cools it shrinks and is good to go. I always use the factory ones when i replace them. |

Marine engines use manual transmission car flywheels (not automatic flexplates). Don't spend more then $50 bucks plus shipping for one. Buy a reman/resurfaced one... even cheaper. Boats don't use a clutch so it really doesn't matter if it was resurfaced. Most decent machine shops can just replace the ring gear but sometimes it's just cheaper to get a refurb'd one. |
