Its time to bite the bullet. My impeller supply is down to one spare, with none available. Im switching over to a crank mounted raw water pump. (Sherwood P1050) Any tips of suggestion for this project? It seems fairly straight forward, I just don't want to overlook something. Some questions I have are: 1) Best location for scoop/thru hull? Directly underneath pump or towards the transom? I dont want to have any water flow issues. 2) I have been told to just pull the old impeller in the outdrive and let the shaft spin. Any problems with this? I don't believe any actual "cooling" takes place in the drive other than the water it is in. Thanks |

I recall there was someone over on iboats.com doing this too but I don't recall what the outcome was. One thing I was thinking of is that most boats have a cooler for the power steering in line with the raw water intake hose. Since with a crank pump you are not pulling water up from the transom through your normal water intake hose, you'd have to find a way to route the cooling water from the impeller through that cooler on the way to the thermo housing. Many OMCs had the P/S cooler on the rear of the engine, but some (Big Block Ford) did not. |

Hmmmm, didnt think of that. Thanks for the info. I posted the same question over there and didn't get any responses. I honestly have no clue if mine has the power steering cooler or not, will definitely check on that. |
