Post subject:  Engine won't start

recently ran out of fuel due to a faulty fuel guage. I had someone bring me five gallons and she started right up. I put more fuel in it and the other day I just putted around the marina and the engine kept killing as if it was running out of gas. My tank is low because it won't run long enough to get to the pump but I did transfer about 10 gallons by way of gas cans. Prior to this my engine would ocassionaly only get up to 3000 rpm when I gave it full throttle. I though I had this problem resolved when I replaced the anit-syphon valve. Now the engine will not start. I have checked the fuel pump fuse and it is fine (learned that one the hard way too). I ran the fuel hose directly into the gas can to ensure it was getting fuel. I currently have the fuel/water seperator pulled and have to get a new one but when I pulled it there was fuel present and it was topped off. My new Mercmonitor says it is getting 42 psi fuel pressure if I remember correctly. I can also hear the fuel pump prime up. I am kind of at a loss now.

The engine is a 2004 Mercruiser 350 MPI. Thanks in advance for any help!

try starting, let it roll over a few times -- then pull a spark plug and smell to see if gas is making into the cylinders. if so - look for ignition issues?

Will do.

Also you may want to check the fuel\water seperator and filters. I know I had a 91 S-10 Blaser that had a clogged fuel filter and it would hardly run. Changed it and it ran like new.

I have the fuel water seperator filter off from the forward starbord side of the engine. where may the other filter be. There was one on the deck next to the generator but a mechanic eliminated it and said I didn't need it which I never liked.

I'm pretty sure your engine has the vortec EFI. If so, it'll need a lot more than 42PSI. My E-manuals are still packed from my recent move so I can't help you with the specs. Find the specs and have a pressure and volume test done.

Most pumps WILL fail after being run empty.

John beat me to it. I agree. Fuel pumps depend on submersion (or at least good splashing) to keep cool. They don't like to be run dry.

Before installing a new fuel filter, try putting real gas in her as opposed to that government mandated piss-water.

According to Google you need min of 50 PS I and suggested level of 60 PS I...so looks like they nailed your problem.

Tether cord all the way on???

Tether chord is on all the way. I pulled the distributor cap and found some corrosion so I cleaned it off and put it back on and it fired up right away. I then replaced the cap and rotor to ensure it doesn't happen again. I then took the boat out and it ran fine for about a hour and then suddenly on my way in it just died. I waited a bit and it started back up. It now will start for the first time in the day and run for a few minutes and then die and will start about two more times before it will not start again without sitting for a while. I am thinking it is the coil and ignition module combo and have a new one on order which hopefully will be here tomorrow and fix this aggravating problem!
