Well after I say good things about the Crownline, this weekend the outdrive starts grinding bad. I pull it to the shop and the whole outdrive is about to fall off (in the words of the mech) It is a known problem with that Duo and Vovlo has made a bracket to fix it. You have to lift the engine to install it.

Now, now... dont be blaming Crownline for Volvo Penta's error. Crownline makes an awesome boat, great hull and very sexy lines. Every engine manufacturer has known issues (i.e. Merc's corrosion issues as of recent)

My old OMC Cobra engages with a solid 'thunk' when it's properly adjusted. Dog clutch drives like the Merc Alpha and Cobra have to be shifted briskly into gear or they grind. A Volvo I'd suspect is smoother, being a cone clutch, but I have never driven one so I don't know for sure.

I suspect the thunk I hear is caused by the backlash in the prop shafts. There is probably 0.005 maybe 0.0010 backlash and that's enough to cause a thunk sound.

The funny thing is occasionally it doesnt make a sound at all, it seems after a really long run at cruising speed solves the problem. Then if I come off plane lets say to dock, it doesnt make any noise and is quiet and smooth as a mouse. :?:

You've got me!
