Post subject: | Volvo Raw Water Pump dripping |
My Raw Water Pump (Mounted on the Harmonic Balancer) of my 2000 Volvo 5.7 GSpwtr engine is dripping since I did the impeller change a couple months ago. I found some information, and included it at the bottom of this post. So here are my questions about the shaft seal and bearings: 1. Can anyone who has replaced the shaft seal on these raw water pumps offer advise (and pictures if possible)? 2. Do I need to remove the whole pump (with pulley) to change the shaft seal? 3. Is there a "direction" that the shaft seal needs to be installed? 4. Is it likely that I need to change the bearing also? 5. What is the source of the bearing(s)? What P/N? Is it a bushing type or ball-bearing? edit: I found it is a sealed ball bearing, SKF 6006-2rs1 or 6006-2RSC3? These are steel bearings. SS6006-2RS would be Stainless Steel equivalent, which seems like a good idea. Am I better off replacing the whole pump assembly...what does that part cost? (mine is the all brass type (no plastic pipes), and the impeller chamber is in good condition) Ray To put some of the information I found on this forum in one place, I found these threads: http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7349&p=70889&hilit=pump+seal#p70889 http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4405&hilit=pump+seal and it was stated that the "VP Pump" includes the impeller housing and the pulley, and includes a new impeller. and that removal of the pump is done with a 5/16" Hex Key ("Allen wrench") I also see on the Volvo Penta Store that the "Shaft Seal" is P/N 0827247 and that the whole pump is p/n 21214596 (only available through dealer?) and that the impeller kit for this pump is P/N 21213660 $53.44 at vp store (includes impeller, 0-ring and washer, but no shaft seal) VP Bulletin P-26-6-2 can be found here: http://www.marinepowerservice.com/PDF/impellers.pdf |

I had the same problem you describe, leaking after I changed impeller. I believe my pump (1996 5.0 VP) is different than yours, but the mechanics are the same. 1. Sorry, no pics. But the seal is under the impeller and can be a son-of-a-gun to "dig" out. I used a small flat tip screwdriver. 2. Yes. It is best to have it on a work bench to get the old seal out. 3. Mine had to go solid end down. There is a open groove on one side, this needs to go up. 4. Unless the bearing is making noise or it is binding when you turn it, I would say no. 5. See #4. It really is a easy job, once you get the old impeller out. When putting the new seal in, coat it with dish detergent and it will "pop" right in. Oh, I used a sparkplug socket to fit around the shaft and tapped the new seal in gently with a rubber mallet. |

Thanks Niagra, I ordered the seal yesterday, along with another impeller kit. I also have my local bearing shop trying to get an SKF p/n SS6006-2RS bearing (the Stainless Steel version of 6006-2RS). I think my 13 year old bearing has some play in it, and that's why the seal went bad. When I rebuild the pump a couple weeks from now, I will take pictures and document the process. |
