I am getting some backfires (sounds like a popping or spitting) and feels like a momentary pause) while running in the high 20mphs (per GPS). I had it serviced back in early May as it needed a new starter and had them pull the drive, change fuel and oil filters, oil, gear lube, belts, impeller etc. Year ago I put a new fuel pump in, new distributor, along with having the carb rebuilt. Mechanic checked my timing and said he made some little adjustment and had it running smooth. It fires right up and runs smooth at idle. The backfire's are occurring while underway. Any ideas? I use the stabil in the fuel with each fill up.

I had that problem on my Sea Ray that was carbureted. It ran fine until you started at higher RPMs, then it would start popping backfires through the carb. This happened when I first got the boat, and then had the carb rebuilt and that fixed it. Unfortunately two seasons later it started happening again and tried a few other remedies (changed the in line fuel filter, checked the timing, cleaned the flame arrester with brake cleaner, changed the ignition coil) to no avail. Had the carb rebuilt again and ran like a champ.

Thanks. My Mechanic mentioned to me that even though the carb was rebuilt just a year ago, with the ethanol in gas and the fact that I do not run the engine January - April (tax season) it probably needed a rebuild.

You're welcome, hope that fixes the problem.

Use the green diaphragm kit. The black one isn't e10 safe

Going to deal with it this weekend as we have plans. Would any carb cleaner help it temporarily?
