Post subject:  Max wot rpm on 95 190 Horizon 5.0

Hey All,

Have a 95 190 Horizon currently with a 14.25 x 21 ss prop (given to me). I want to re-prop to get some bottom end speed and I think years ago I ran a 14.25 x 19 ss before it got chewed up. Question yes, what is the max wot rpms should I be running so that I know not to over/under prop it. Currently it feels like a dog outta the hole so I think re-proping is in order.

thanks...fred

My old '95 190 Horizon had a 5.0 EFI with a recommended wide open throttle rpm range of 4200-4600 rpm. Redline is 4600 rpm. Mine had a 14.25 X 21 aluminum OMC/Volvo prop and turned 4600 rpm with a trimmed out top speed of 50 to 54 mph, depending on load. I put a 14.25 X 21 Stiletto stainless steel prop on it and could not tell any difference in numbers or performance at any speed. Prop guys will tell you that changing prop pitch on this category of boat will increase 150-200 rpm for each 1 inch less pitch. A 19 inch pitch may give a top end of 5000 rpm! It will help hole shot and towing water sports toys, but I would not want to use it for cruising. My boat would typically get about 4.25 to maybe 5 mpg. At the hit of the throttle and coming out of the hole the 21p prop should give you around 3000-3100 rpm. I did have an early problem with exhaust flapper valves on mine. One flapper came loose and partially blocked the exhaust in the Y pipe/transom area. The boat had trouble planing and top end was maybe 40 instead of 50+.
