Hey guys, I know this is a forum dedicated to fourwinns boats but I have a question about another boat I have. It is a 1992 javelin fish and ski. We recently went on vacation in tennesee at douglas lake. We put the boat in the water and took off. All was good. After running it for a few mins the motor started bucking (every 2seconds when on full plane) it was almost like the prop would free spin on the shaft for a fraction of a second and then grab again. Shook the whole boat rack time it bucked. Removed the prop and checked the splines in the shaft and the prop. Everything looked good. Went back out bad it ran fine for a min or two. We decided it only did it after the motor got up to running temp. Any ideas? |

Prop hub may be shot. A prop shop can replace them. |

The more I read about spun hubs, it says that the Rpm's go up and looses speed (prop spinning) There is no noticeable loss of speed or increase of Rpm's. just a violent jarring. A friend said it could be in the lower unit? Some sort of clutch? |

What motor/drive combination do you have? If its a Merc Alpha or OMC Cobra they shift into gear with dog clutches and if the shift cable is sticky or out of adjustment they can jump out of gear and it feels like a big clunk, like the clutch slipped one notch. If you run it like that much longer it will wear the sliding dog clutch, fwd and rev gears. Basically may need a lower unit rebuild. The cure for this is to replace the lower shift cable and make sure it has full engagement in fwd and rev. You want equal shift travel on both sides of neutral. This can be checked with the engine off y having someone spin the prop while you shift it in fwd and rev. You can feel if it locks on gear or not. |

Same dog clutch but a mechanical linkage instead of a cable. You can do the same checks to see if it locks in fwd and rev. If the linkage is good you might need new fwd/rev gears and dog clutch. What wears them out is an out of adjustment linkage and shifting too slow so it grinds. Dog clutch shifting you have to shift briskly. |
