I need a new alienator belt the old on is stretched past the point of adjustment. It looks like a standard v-belt but not sure if it is the same as an automotive style. It is for a 1990 4.3 carbed cobra. It has 2 belts one for the alt. and one for the power steering pump. If one the old wise seamen here can give me an in-site, and bring this young eager to learn captain to one day be one of you. |

Yep, belts are belts....Take your worn belt to any auto store (I prefer NAPA), they can match it up and it will cost a lot less than a "marine" belt from a marina shop. |

I have the same engine in my '88. If you have an Evinrude dealer local to you they can order parts for Cobras through BRP. If not go to: http://www.crowleymarine.com Go into parts catalog, put in your info (year, model #) and go to the diagrams for parts. I get stuff from them when I know I'll need it. If I need it right away I go to my local ex-OMC shop. |

You certainly can do that, but if you can't find them that way... P/S belt part #5 http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-ev ... /55813.cfm Alt belt part #44 note you need the one for models with power steering http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-ev ... /55803.cfm You can see I've been doing this for while, LOL..... I've gotten a number of parts from them over the years and they ship pretty fast. I'd probably buy 2 of each since I don't know how easy these are to find at an auto parts store..... |

I prefer goodyear gatorback belts. Gates belts tend to make noise. Worth the few extra bucks. The cheap guys like Autozone/Discount Auto Parts don't carry them. You'll have to hit up a NAPA, Bennett, Oreally, one of those places. |

Might be a silly question, but does anybody have a NAPA or other parts house part # for an alternator v-belt for a 4.3 engine? My port engine alternator belt, although tight, flops around a lot. Im thinking at 17 years old, its cheap insurance just to replace it before our big 160 mile trip coming up!! Ill save the old floppy one as an emergency spare. If I had a part#, I could pick it up on my way home from work as I live far away from any parts places to go home, take the belt off, and then go back. |

Nevermind. Went to Goodyears site and selected marine, found the belt for $5.58 with free shipping on Ebay!!! Compare that to $28-$42 that Ive seen for the genuine oem volvo penta belt, pssshhht! For reference, a 1997 Volvo Penta 4.3l uses Goodyear gatorback alternator v-belt #15491. Plug that part number into a few different places for the best price. (Rockauto was even cheaper but shipping killed it, ebay wins this time with their free shipping). |

There needs to be a sticky somewhere stating that volvo penta doesn't make anything on your engine except the outdrive. Most likely OEM is Gates brand. |

Dont you know, everything, down to the oil fill cap is super special extra engineered marine designated?? ![]() ![]() Fuel and ignition items, I will always buy the marine designated for obvious (explosion) reasons. But methinks v-belts are the same exact thing, except when it has "VOLVO PENTA" stamped on it, it comes with a $40 premium. |
