What is the best way to locate the cause of my tachometer not working? I don't know if the problem is actually the instrument itself, the wiring, or something else. |

Is it completely dead or acting funky? Check the wires coming off of the coil. Could be loose or corroded. |

Pretty dead. The needle is just above zero and does not move when the boat is started up. |

My tachometer developed a fault, the needle would move very slowly to the correct position or swing madly. I remembered reading about a solution that fixes a faulty gauge 90% of the time. On the back of the gauge there is small fitting that can be turned to 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. Put a small flat screwdriver on it, push it in and move up and down through the settings then leave it in its original position. Work a little lubricant through the same area. Mine has worked for months since I tried it. Apparently this mechanical part and the electrical connections are a weak spot for corrosion. These are quite helpful in relation to a Mercruiser/Faria gauge setup - might be some information that will help with your VP? http://forums.iboats.com/electrical-ele ... 28450.html http://www.faria-instruments.com/site_m ... meters.pdf |
