On another forum, I've been asked about information from some time ago where VP had an issue with improper drive prep/prime/paint and the resulting corrosion, and several people wound up getting their drives re-painted from scratch or possibly even replaced.

Does anyone have any better memory about this? By any chance does anyone here have any contact information at VP? Feel free to contact me privately. Thanks for any help.

Mike,

I do vaguely remember this from many years ago as well ! Honestly though , the original paint stuck pretty well to my 1999 drive and the 2004 one seems the same. Unfortunately I painted my 2004 drive in 2005 with some reputedly astonishly effective 2 component silicone non stick product from International, Growth was as bad as usual, nothing came off easily and no other antifouling paint would stick to it ! It took me days to sand it all off ( and the barnacles love the antifouling paint I've used since ) The silicone product was discontinued in 2006 !

This was, I thought in the 2007-2008 time frame. I don't recall whether it coincided with the new drive design, but I don't think so.

Oh and Graham, you might know the answer to this. Are there some conditions in which ACPS is supposed to be turned off/disconnected, if the boat is equipped with it? I was thinking so but have always left mine on and have never had issues, so I've never needed to retain that information. :)

Mike,

When they sell it as an accessory, they say it's only for use in salt water. However, as it senses the potential between the drive and surrounding water. I can't see it doing any harm in fresh water ( i.e. it may be doing nothing !)

re the pulled thread by Ric ( at least, I don't see it anymore) ...............didn't get out on the boat today, tomorrow is looking likely so far ! Light Easterly winds forecasted, there's a local saying though that when the wind is from the East, nothing good happens and there'll certainly be no fish caught; it's often so true !

Well, go got out today, the first time in more than 2 months. The engine started first time, it was sunny, warm ( 20 deg. C, that's warm here for the Summer, let alone late September!) with very little wind to begin with. Saw some dolphins, didn't bother fishing. The swell was huge, we were losing sight of the 20m + high cliffs on land, but the swell was once every 10 seconds or so; very comfortable.

The return journey was very diffferent; the wind got up and was against the tide , the sun went in, waves over the windscreen at some of the headlands, our cocker spaniel got well fed up; but overall a very nice trip !

Then a late afternoon lunch outside in the sun at an award winning pub, nice beer and food, a quick cut of the lawn at our holiday cottage and a fast 95 mile/ 75 minute drive home. ( note to self; I need to slow down !). Then to get home to a Mother in Law who is not talking to use for some reason ( our daughter took he to see her husband in hospital today).

Still, I don't care, I can still feel the effect of the sun on my face and feel the salt in my hair !

Had a nice ride today, just ran around Northport Bay and did some fishing, caught a Porgy, really nice day.
Noticed that I have less growth on the drive than I usually do at this time. Maybe the barnacles decided to find greener pastures, LOL....
We get these nice days in the fall where there is little wind and the temp is about 70*F water temp 66*F according to the fishfinder.
Going to go out again tomorrow to do more fishing and burn up the 3/4 of a tank of gas still in there.
