 Post subject: throttle cable 1996 238

anyone have any luck lubing the throttle cable. the throttle is easy when not in gear but difficult in gear>

suggestions?

your problem is not the throttle cable if it is easy when not in gear. Most likely your shift cable (which typically goes before your throttle) is what is giving you problems.

Most likely as noted above you need a new shift cable to the drive. They corrode internally and then they get sticky. What drive do you have, Merc, Volvo or OMC Cobra?
Volvo uses one cable, from the remote control to the transom mount/outdrive, Merc Alpha and OMC Cobra have 2, one from the remote to the engine shift bracket and another from that to the drive itself. Usually it is the engine to drive cable because that one is exposed to the water and when the outer sheath cracks water gets in and corrodes it internally.
