Long to short shaft Mercury conversion?

Would anyone have an idea on the approximate cost and feasibility for converting a 2001 Mercury 15 hp 2 stroke outboard engine from a long shaft (20") to short shaft (15")?

I was looking at buying a Nissan ns3.5a outboard off craigslist for a buddy's john boat, it was long shaft. I figured hey it couldn't be expensive to convert it back. Wrong. The outboard was $250 used, and would have cost another $400+ to convert. The parts needed are the most expensive parts on the whole engine. I can only imagine on that 15hp. Just pull up a parts diagram and basically price a whole new leg (driveshaft, housing, etc).

Yeah got some prices to convert my 2001 Merc 15hp 2 stroke long shaft to a short shaft. Parts come in around $400.00 - $500.00 plus labour. Doesn't make sense to go this route.

Has anyone ever used a product called "transom evalator"? This is an aluminum "box" that sits on top of the transom (and bolts down over existing transom) and raises the overall transom height 5" so the long shaft outboards can be used. Price is around $190.00.

Any other practical thoughts on how to deal with this?

Thoughts? Yes buy a short shaft motor

A transom elevator or jacking plate will effectively give you the outcome you're chasing.
Note that you'll be raising the centre of gravity by lifting it...
