Anyone ever take their Gimbal ring/ Pivot housing off with out the use of a puller tool 3854361 for the top portion? Its on there really good, but trying to find a solution with out buying a $100 tool that I'll use once. This is the tool to take the steering rode off the top of the housing. http://www.flickr.com/photos/112575679@N08/ Thanks |

If it's a SX-M MHP transom shield (the one with the 2 anodes) , you won't need a puller. Some 5.7s have that shield, some don't. I removed the gimbal ring on my 2004 (November 2003 build) shield quite easily a few years ago, in order to re-shim it to get rid of the awful squealing noises it used to make If you do have the MHP shield, bear in mind that in addition to the 4 top bolts you can see on the upper cover, there are an additional 2 bolts that pass from the engine compartment through the inner transom shield that have to be removed as well. |

Just curious, why do you need to remove it, to replace the bellows you don't need to do that. |

The top vertical shaft that connects to the tiller arm (goes trough the transom for steering) is really lose. Wanted to replace the sleeve/bearings while I was in that far. Also wanted to clean everything up and re-lube all the bolts. Some corrosion has started to set in from the previous owner leaving it in the water for a couple months or more. |

OK got it. I recall reading on iboats that those bushings do eventually wear out on both the Cobra and Volvo SX designs....When I last checked mine they seemed OK, how much play did you feel in yours? |

I have a video I can email you. After looking at it with my 10 dollar tool, there is no way to remove the housing with out the volvo penta pulling tool. Here is a clip of how lose it was. http://youtu.be/4TNJciUidSg |

that seems like a crapload of excessive play. I pullled mine apart because a od slight water seepage up past the seal. but an oldschool machinist friend made a puller and pulled it apart for me. He made a contraption that put pressure on it to pull the arm up and gave it a few wacks with a brass drift and hammer and it poped off easilly |

Much cheaper then most places online. Ill have it for future projects. Ready to get this boat back together!!! We boat down here almost 10months out of the year. Next job is the trailer bearings. |

Nice, thanks for the feed back and photos.... I think my '88 has the original (greasable) u-joints, LOL....so you won't have to do them again any time soon.... |

Went ahead and ordered another crush sleeve for the upper gear housing. Maintenance manual says once the torque is off for removing the drive shaft/yoke the crush sleeve needs replacing. Have the new one and can't imagine that thing ever crushing easily. Made out of metal. Thought it was a plastic piece. |

What is the torque spec? Sounds like setting up the pinion bearing on the Dana axles used on older Jeeps.... |

LouC wrote: What is the torque spec? Sounds like setting up the pinion bearing on the Dana axles used on older Jeeps.... 9-14 in/lbs of torque. Still toying with the idea of not doing the crush sleeve, gear housing keeps its self together. See how hard it is to break it down and get to the crush sleeve. |
