I have done some searching but I cannot find what I'm looking for. I have painted many vehicles and parts, but have never painted anything that spends extended time in the water. So with that being said, what is the process for painting the outdrive and what supplies(paint and primer) do I need to do so. Can you use the old rattle can,can you use auto paint, or do you have to go get the Merc paint that is twice as much?

I just touched up mine. Sanded the rough spots down. Two coats of Interlux Primocon, then two coats of Phantom Black. We'll see how it holds up. My drives were in good shape to begin with though.

Its tricky to get paint to stick to aluminum, and it depends on the condition of the paint to start with. If the OE finish is in good shape then the prep is not the extensive, but if its peeling with a lot of aluminum corrosion its a lot more work.

look for a sticky in the engines section on painting aluminum outdrives, by Geebee. He has it all there.
here in the salt pond, its a losing battle. I just sand, wipe it down with paint thinner, hit the bare spots with Primocon and then top coat it with 2 coats of Trilux 33 anti fouling paint.

I asked four different marine mechanics about painting my outdrive and they all said the same thing.
Clean it up good and hit it with the Merc rattle can.
