solas amita to quicksilver 5

Hey guys just wondering if anyone knows this....

current prop is a solas amita 4 blade 19p alum. runs about 45mph at 4800ish those are rough numbers as I'm never alone in the boat...

want to buy a quicksilver 5 blade ss 19 pitch. I know that by rule you are supposed to drop a pitch per blade but read something that it doesn't apply to the 5 blade... is there a difference from 4 blade alum. to 5 blade ss? don't want to drop that kind of cash and hate it.

Hey Mate

In my experience I would stay with a 19p for the high5. Moving from a 3 blade Ali prop there may be some reason to change pitch but from a 4 blade SS prop to a 5 blade I would stick to the same pitch.

A 17P - 5 blade would probably over rev the motor anyway and I think most guys on this forum with 5 blades would have a 19P.

What is your out drive's gear ratio?

Don't quote me on this, but from what I've seen the high5 runs low. If you're good with a 19 3 blade you'll need a 20-21 high5.

The best thing to do is find a mercury dealer close and get a "demo prop" to try, or do like me and buy used off eBay and sell for what you paid if it doesn't work.

gear ratio is the 1.66

I decided to pull the trigger on a quicksilver 5 blade 19 pitch on ebay. good deal and if I don't like it I'll just try to resell... I really want the lower end more than I care about top end, so I'll just pay close attention to the wot RPMS and be careful. The engine builder said That I should be able to run 5000 to 5100 rpms all day long but never had a prop that I could hit that. Hopefully it comes in this week and I can give you guys some numbers.

just to add, the 4 blade amita is a great all around prop, might get another or this one reconditioned. has great low end and didn't lose much if any top end compared to the other 3 blades I've tried.

I do a ton of watersking and hoping I can get guys up for double barefooting (that's assuming I can do around 42mph with the 5 blade) if I can pics will follow..

alright sorry for the long delay, between shipping getting screwed up and 3 kids playing baseball/softball I didn't get much time to get out on the boat. made it out last night for a couple of hours.

couple of quick numbers ( i should have written them down) but here is what i remember

5 adults in the boat average weight of close to 200 lbs plus a 100 lb lab. cooler of beer, 3/4 tank of gas.

Both Props 19 Pitch

I forget to get time to plane, but it was really good for that kind of weight in the boat. If I had to guess, it was around 4 secs.

with eveyone in the boat
cruised at 25 mph @ 3200rpm
30 mph @ 3600 rpm
WOT 41 mph @ 4600 rpm

alone

whole shot was nuts, almost jumped out of the water. 2 sec. to plane roughly. really unreal.
didn't have time to just cruise
WOT 44MPH @ 4800rpm

The holding power of this prop is nuts though, no slipping at all in the corners and I (alone) could trim up enough at WOT to make the boat dance. couldn't even get the QST 5 to blow out trimming way up. For watersports it will be fantastic I think, wake is great at 20 mph +/- for wakeboarding, nice and flat at 34mph for watersking. I will let you know after this weekend how that goes.

I have to put the amita back on to take some numbers but I know the whole shot isn't as quick, but otherwise it might out perform everywhere else except for holding power.
I could hit 48mph @ 4800rpm by myself with the amita and the engine didn't seem to run as hard. (wasn't as loud) if that makes sense, and cruising speed and gas usage was great.

To be honest, The Solas amita was/is a great prop even compared to the Quicksilver Qst5 for what I need it for. I will be rebuilding my old one to use as my cruising prop as it still pulls skiers just fine for the occasional run.

The quicksilver will go on for the days that watersports take priority.

Going to get some better numbers this weekend but this was a start.

take detail numbers with just you .. possibly a gauges video that is the best indicator for most people to visually see the acceleration compared to the rpm.. i have a solos 4 and i am very happy. i also have the 5.0efi and not the 4.3 so our comparisons are not apple to apple.. but still close for hull and weight is comparable

I can do that for you no problem. I'll take some video of the wake at both wakeboard speed and slalom speed also for comparison. will probably be with another person in the boat but since you need a spotter anyways it will be a good comparison to normal ski/wakeboard conditions.

one note though is that the Solas 4 has a slightly bend fin but I barely noticed a difference. but I'll try and do a video of both props, as long as I don't drop a nut or something in the water changing them out. lol.. on second thought I better bring 2 of everything in case I get fumble fingers.

Noticed last night that I might have a faulty thermostat also. temp only went up to 130 tops. I noticed it earlier in the year but the water temp is quite cold yet, around 65 or so. Ordered a new one and will pick it up tonight to change out before tomorrow.

so, got the thermostat changed everything good there. put in late 6pm so we made a couple ski runs, talk about fantastic pulling power. Unfortunately hit something in the middle of the channel again...UGH. no damage to the Prop but bent/twisted my skag, bad enough that the day came to a stop. phone a friend that is a welder he can replace it but is super busy right now. might have to just get a S.S. skeggaurd thing for now. never ends

didn't get a change to run numbers and times before the mishap. hold tight guys, I'll get some one of these days.

LOVE the SKEGGUARD i just installed. find the part number and search WALMART. i found that they were the cheapest on the internet surprisingly but about $24 than anyone else even manufacture direct. also i got free shipping that was 2 days..

you need to organize a water way clean up clean sweep action.. get all those logs and crap off of the lower banks that drift out into the water with heavy wakes. we have a few each year and the core of engineers works very hard to keep the waters clear of floating shit.

I expect numbers ! we are very close on weight and thus i am interested in your results. not too many of us 90s horizons so we have to stick together..

They drained the flowage 3 years ago to fix the damn and wouldn't let anyone remove or cut down any wood or rocks. guy got fined big time for doing so. Stevens Point used to be a huge logging town, all the way up the river are wood pillars that used to keep the logs floating together. nobody knew they were there until they lowered the river. Helped a fellow boater pull a log that was at least 30' long and probably 16" in diameter out two weeks ago though. was barely floating at the top. must have been an old one that broke loose from the bottom. it is still at the boat landing, I'll take a picture of it next time if it is still there. probably should have sold it. lol.
I barely ever go on the point side of the flowage but meet a bunch of friends. plover side of the dam is always clean and better for watersports anyways. just ordered the skegguard. should be here friday. I'll get some numbers for you guys no worries.

I appologize again everyone. only been twice and always a full boat of people. did get a short clip though. getting out this weekend and I'll break off and get some real numbers then when someone can ride with and record for me. harder than I thought to do by myself.. anyways here is a short clip of the qst 5 19 pitch for a standing start. ignore the temp gauge, reads low, and of course my trim gauge doesn't work anymore. but the tach is on, speedo a little fast. gps said 43, but I was moving up river. river flows at a pretty steady 3-4mph.

I went from Alpha 4 to Vensura and it was like buying a new boat. Not all 4 blades are created equal!

My 220hp 4000lb boat does 47mph as of last weekend with less than 10% prop slip. 42 with the Alpha 4. Same pitch, tons more acceleration. Imagine what your 260hp H180 would do with a Vensura (should do 62-65 with one)
