What if the whole boat starts shaking badly?

That's because you had the u-joints in a bind, they are not designed to transmit power at such an extreme angle. If you had a constant vibration then the joints may have to be replaced, but is it OK with the drive down? If so do not worry.

The OMC manual that came with my '95 190 Horizon said it was OK at idle with the trim full up, but not faster than that. On start up the engine usually goes to a fast idle before slowing down to 600+rpm. We had it happen a few times with out problems. Yes it does shake the boat when the outdrive is trying to whip back and forth. I wouldn't worry about it unless you find other problems showing up. Go boating and have fun with it.
