No, a new Pope has no been elected. New belts, but i suspect it's a belt problem (again). Idle is fine, but over 2000RPM I smell burning, and when I open the engine cover there is lots of white smoke. The attached pictures give you an idea of what's left...is this a belt problem? Too lose, too tight? The one pic with the white arrow, the belt is probably 1/2"+ play, and I can see what looks like the alternator flywheel move when I tug on the belt. the other shots show all the clecks of...well, is that rubber from the belt? At this point should I replace the belts (they were new) I'm not the most proficient guy, but I could go at this with a wrench and screwdriver, couldn't I? Thanks everyone! Mark ![]() |

Where the belts squealing before all the smoke? Also, what was your temp gauge reading? White smoke sometimes means impeller has went kaflooey |

Just this weekend a friend was telling me how he took his dad's boat out after a recent belt change and the belts started smoking and making noise. He swapped the old belts back on (they were kept as spares) and everything was fine. Wish I knew why the new belts didn't work like the old ones... |

Yes, belts were squealing for a short period, while it was in my driveway just making sure everything was ready. No more squeals after it warmed up. Temp gauge was perfect (I worried about THAT, too.) No other adverse reading -- except that maybe the alternator was charging at 10 rather than 12. BTW, I had JUST cleaned the engine, so it was CLEAN before all the soot was deposited there in just a matter of minutes. The smoke smell would present itself after about 30 seconds of higher RPM (3000+). At 1000RPM (troll speed) there was no problem. Mark |

when you adjust the belts the tension should be just tight enough that you cant spin the alt pulley by hand |

Hi again. Okay, here's what I think is the ALT. The belt is WAY loose. I mean I can pull it 3/4 inch. Much more loose than any of the others. Can I just loosen the bolt (arrow) and pull the Alternator tighter?Or am I in over my head? |

While you have the alt loose, spin it by hand and listen/feel for bearing noise. I suspect your alt may be shot. Once done with the alt, using a bar tension until you can flex the belt about 1/2" deflection. Tighten everything back up and test. EDIT: I also recommend cleaning your pulleys with sand paper. The rust could be eating your belts. |

I would also replace the belt it looks to be deep in the pulley groove. plus its most likely scortched on the edges of the belt , which will cause a squeal |

Thank you! Each of you has been a great help. So I loosened the bolts. Everything went well. I leveraged the alternator tightl using a crowbar and tightened the two bolts (One bolt on the ALT, pictured, does not have a nut on it. I will search one out and put it on - preferably with a lock-washer?) The new belt is on and I ran the engine up to 3500rpm for some time -- no smoke, so smell, just the purr of the engine. Of course, it will take a water test to make sure and that will happen this weekend. Thanks again |

If I may ask one more question. The new belt (from AutoZone) is on and I ran heavy loads for about 45 minutes (up to 4K RPM). Everything looks good, adn, interstingly, the voltage meter reads 14 -- stronger than the 10 or so it was showing with the loose belt. Here's a pic of the belt after the 45 minutes. See the fraying on the outside? Is that acceptable? Thanks! |

Yes and no. Typically, a new belt is a little thicker than the pulley. So "some" fraying will occur, however it should take awhile. You could have some rust spots on your pulley that is causing this. Easiest fix is to sand and re-paint the pulley. |

The reason you see higher volts is because now your alternator is actually charging the battery, whereas before the belt was slipping so much it was not charging. |

It now reads 14, pushing 15 when RPMs are up. Am I stressing the system? Can I adjust that or does a shop need to do it? Mark |

Sounds pretty normal to me, taking into account the accuracy of the gauge. It would be best to check with a DVM though. "Normal" max charging voltage on a 12 volt automotive system is around 14.4V. |
