It may have been much colder (air more dense) when you last had it open?
This frequently happens to my SX Drive...

Check it for water, when that happens it can be sucking in water and that eventually pressurizes the gear lube. The drive starts out cool, then you run it the oil heats up and expands a bit and when it cools off if a seal leaks under vaccum it pulls in water. Happened to me a long time ago when I first had it.

Yep there were 2 seals that were replaced, one behind the water pump shaft and one for the bearing retainer.

It will reduce because of the temp going down, but there is no vent on an outdrive like an automotive differential, so the pressure will tend to remain.
When everything is OK, you can actually hear a bit of vaccum opening it up after using when it sat long enough to cool off.

It probably sucked in just enough water to pressurize it. Can you rig something up to do a pressure and vaccum test?
