| Post subject: | BANGED UP MY SS PROPS AND SKEG |
I hit botom going into my favorite cove last week at low tide. Was going very slow, but the rocky bottom banged up my stainless steel props and took a chunk out of the rear of my skeg (the prop must have kicked up a rock into it). Anyway, I will have the props reconditioned over the winter, but I'm not sure what to do if anything about the skeg. Should I just leave it? Will it affect performance in any way? The missing chunk is about the size of half dollar coin. Any opinions would help. Thanks HBender 2006 248 Vista Conecticut, USA |

I doubt that you will see any issues relating to performance. You definitely need to get the props fixed. If you decide not to get the skeg fixed, I'd get some zinc primer and a can of Volvo pint and touch up the area so the aluminum is not exposed to the water. |

thanks for the reply. The props will definitly be sent for reconditioning over the winter (my season ends next week up here in CT), despite the fact that the damage was not major and I did not feel any vibration on the ride home from the cove. I probably wont bother with the skeg unless and until I sell the boat. I keep the boat on a lift, so it does not sit in the salt water for more than a night or two at a time (if I am overnighting somewhere). So do you think the volvo touch up paint is necessary? Personally, I would at least keep it painted. I know some folks will differ. |

Touch up the paint. If you get into a marina and have a poorly maintained boat with a faulty electrical system or a marina who has issues with the electric on their docks, corrosion can happen fast. Better safe than sorry. |

thanks. I'll order the paint and touch it up over the winter (i'll be stored indoors). maybe i'll even spring for the skeg to be correctly repaired....i'll get an estimate....or maybe I'll just forget the repairs altogether and trade it into the dealer this winter for a new V288 !!!!! hbender 2006 248 Vista |
