Post subject: | outdrive rotation? |
As some of you know I'm in the process of building an engine for my 95 horizon 180. My question is how would I find out if this was a reverse rotation engine to begin with? My first thought would be engine firing order, and if I'm correct a std rotation would have the same firing order as a normal car/truck. If this is a reverse rotation boat can I change it to std rotation by using a specific prop? would the outdrive spinning the wrong way be too weak or are the gears the same size and strength forward and reverse? Thanks in advance you guys have been great. |

It would be extremely unlikely that someone would have installed a rev rot engine and drive. |

I agree with LouC --- However if you really wanted to confirm -- get a manual and look at the distributor rotation -- it should be noted in most manuals. then pull distributor cap -- have someone crank engine and you look. the distributor rotation is related to the crank rotation-- if one is backward the other will be also.{at your boat age I am assuming the engine has a distributor) |

I don't think this boat was modified, I was wondering if they came from the factory that way? or do they only use reverse rotation in twin engine setups? No can do on the cranking engine Dale, I'm looking at a bare engine block right now(engine completely town down). Good point about the manual, I usually get one for every thing I own, but I have yet to get one for thing. Is it safe to say all single engine four Winns came with std rotation? |

Rev rotation engines were often used in twin inboard applications, I guess it was cheaper than trying to reverse the transmission. If you want to know for sure: remove the drive have someone turn the input shaft clockwise shift the drive into fwd look at the prop shaft, it should be turning clockwise from the rear of the drive (right hand prop) That would prove that its a standard rotation engine, as unlikely as it is that someone would have changed this. |

Don't the RR engines also have RR props? If so, that would be the telltale too. |
