Trying to winterize boat. Went to start and cranked very slowly. Changed battery, then heard what sounded like the solenoid clicking. Checked cables on battery and starter, all seemed tight and are clean. Tried again now nothing but a faint clicking sound. Haven't had anyone else turn the key to locate sound.

At first I thought it to be the starter but now I'm not sure. Seems like something else. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

It is possible the "new" batter is dead. Try jumping it and see if it works.

I charged the battery and did jump it also. Nothing.

Did you check the connections on the starter side? The ground gets corroded pretty quickly.

Right, check the pos terminal on the solenoid and the ground. Are you using wingnuts on the battery terminals? If so they can seem tight but may not be really. Nylock nuts are better and using marine grade automotive clamps is better still.
Any water on the starter this year? If they get wet they can work for a while but when they internally corrode they start doing what yours sounds like its doing. I had salt water in mine the summer before this past and it worked a right after I pulled the boat out but when I took it off it was full of muddy rusty salt water! Probably would have failed right after I put the boat back in so I put in my spare starter.

Using stainless nuts on the battery terminals. No corrosion on battery. Doesn't look like any corrosion on starter. As for water in starter, I don't think so. We did have some heavy rain this year but bilge works well and usually covered well when on lift.

I'll take the starter terminals off and clean, maybe just enough corrosion to cause problem.
