To me, it really does not play any role in it. As long as water does not go into the engine. I would think the same would hold true for fresh water but time would play more of a factor. In other words, both are bad but salt water you would have to get out quicker.

Little of topic, I have heard story's were someone would drop the 3 or 5hp motor in saltwater by accident. Rinsed and dried it off and it started right up and worked fine after that.
