New to the forum, and being a boat owner! I purchased a 2000 FW horizon 170 over the winter, and I'm starting to get it ready for the water. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on changing the engine oil? I watched a few you tube video's and thought I had it figured out, but when I pulled the drain plug, expecting to find a tube behind it there was nothing. after a few google searches I found that the oil is sucked out through the dip stick tube? is this right? if so, is there a special pump or something that I need to find? sorry for the newb question, like I said, first time boat owner so I've got a lot of learning to do!! thanks for any help!! |

If the dipstick has a threaded end on it (it should) you just get an oil pump with the threaded end. Should look like this: ![]() I got my pump off Amazon. Works on volvo, mercruiser, whatever has the threaded dipstick. Make sure the oil is warm and it literally takes about 30 seconds to pump it out. http://www.amazon.com/Jabsco-34060-0130 ... Yes you need the vacuum pump with the garden hose adaptor, that works much better than the thin tube down the dipstick tube method. |

I picked up an Attwood suction remover this past winter for $15 - normally $45, at Wal-mart. They still had one in clearance last night. http://www.walmart.com/ip/ATTWOOD-MARINE-ATTWOOD-5-QUART-OIL-CHANGING-PUMP-88EP05-4/41479762 Worked great - remove dipstick - push tube into oil dipstick hole, 5-6 pumps and let it suck away. Came back an hour later and pumped a few more times, got it all out. |
