Do you have an emergency cut-off switch like this? Usually connected to a lanyard to keep the switch closed.

Check the basics:

Is there spark? Remove a plug wire and check with a spark tester.
Is there fuel? Look down carb and see if fuel is squirting out.

Bummer1219, I took the liberty of moving your topic here.

Our forums can be very helpful but it's important to post them in the appropriate one.

As Ric said. Basics first.
Is it an EFI/TBI motor or Carb? Do you have the full model number for the engine to hand?

Check the Stop switch and neutral switch. Check Fuel pump for operation and breakers etc. Then check for spark/fuel etc...

1984 should have a carb and points . Like was said check carb for fuel, if there is fuel pull the cap , turn on ignition take a screw driver and open the point to see if there is a spark across the contacts . if you dont have a spark then there is a power problem to the coil which could start with the safety switch as chris mentioned. you can bypass the whole system by running a jumper from the battery to the coil that will tell you if it will run but you will have to run down the cause of the lack of power to the coil. i would run your blower or put a fresh air supply to the bilge area while you are cranking to keep out the fuel fumes that might be collecting

My '84 has the 228 in it, but it is an electronic ignition (Thunderbolt system)... There is not cut-off switch.
There should be a fuel shut-off valve near the fuel filter. Check the fuel line coming in.
Other thoughts: I think everyone else already covered the basics- Neutral safety switch, etc. I had a problem with my ignition coil a few years back- replace with OEM if you think that is the problem. I tried a Napa coil (Sunday afternoon- nobody else open and available) and it did not work.
