So this weekend, while up on plane the starboard engine just dies. I was running about 3200 rpm, barely even a cough and it just dies. We were loaded for the weekend and few other folks on board. Luckily we were close to the cove we were staying the weekend, so ran on 1 and anchored for the weekend.
Got back to the slip yesterday afternoon and start diagnosing the problem. I was getting fuel, but no spark of any kind. So, coil right? Change the coil, still nothing. Go ahead and take off distributor cap, looks ok, but it was time for a new one. Still nothing. Changed the ignition module and success! Fires right up.
Not really a point to this story, but I have never heard of an ignition going bad while the engine was running.
Side, note - reconfirmed the point that my next boat will be decided by the bilge and engine access. A few new scratches on the forearms.

It was a known failure mode on the first generation of GM HEI ignition systems used back in the '70s had it happen 2x on cars we had. Not a bad idea to keep a spare module around. I keep spare dist caps, rotors and points & condenser and coil for my old boat.
