Hello fellow boaters , it's that time of year ! Got a question. I had a new gimbal bearing put in over the off season. Put my boat in for the first time this season and when I turned the key nothing happened . After Everything else checked out I tried starting it while moving the throttle a bit and she fired right up . Evidently she thought she was in gear and would not start . I had a difficult time getting her in reverse and as the day went on shifting from any position got VERY difficult. Is there anything the mechanic could have done while replacing the gimbal bearing or bellow that could cause this to happen? Suggestions ? Thanks .

What power package do you have?
If they took off the drive to replace the gimble bearing the shift cable adjustment may have been changed. Or the shift cable may need to be replaced at this point. How old is the boat?

It is a 1998 Volvo 280HP with a single prop out drive . I don't know if the shift cable has ever been changed . One time last year it wouldn't start because it wasn't in neutral good , but it always shifted easily. When I push the button used to place the lever in choke position it shifts easily. Thanks for responding.

There is some type of a cable retainer on the end of the cable that hooks up with the shift linkage, someone posted pix here (I think the member from Germany, can't recall his name but if you look around I think you'll find it)...this may not have been put on right, or the cable may be out of adjustment. If it shifted well before, then that's the most likely cause....
