Post subject: | Dumb Oil Change Question |
Ok. I've had my H190 since 2002 and although I've changed the oil many times, I've just noticed that there is a male thread, same size as a water hose fitting on the top end of my dipstick tube. Why? Am I to assume I can attach a hose with the female fitting and use that to vacuum oil out? Does anyone know if that would be as effective? As in, reach the bottom of the pan. Have to admit, I hate dealing with my hand pump. |

Yes, you can use an oil extraction system with a short garden type of hose. You can also use a hose that slides over the dipstick tube snugly. Be aware that some dipstick tubes may have a small hole in tube inside the fitting for the garden hose. If you have this small hole in the dipstick tube you might need to use the garden hose. The marine engine dipstick tube goes to the bottom of the crankcase and that is the way the factories recommend removing oil. The first time you check oil level after an oil change, you might notice that the oil on the dipstick looms dirty. This is because the old oil was extracted through the dipstick tube. Hope this helps. |

The garden hose adaptor works much faster. I fabbed up an adaptor for my vaccum pump years back and it sucks all the oil out in about 5 minutes. |

I have a hand pump jabsco pump that screws on the fitting. Takes 5 minutes to change the oil. |

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, guess I got lazy and didn't think the Google it. I'll have to give that method a try. I've been using a small hose down the dipstick tube and it's a pain. |

ditto. Hand pump is much easier. Wish my cars were this easy to change. Hand pump is small but efficient, I sucked out cold oil in about 10 minutes (set the suction, walked away, came back, poked tube to a different corner, and set suction again.) |

Did the water hose connect with a hand pump. Took about 2 minutes...wish I would have noticed that connection years ago. |
