Post subject:  OMC 3.0L issue???

Hey guys,

I have a brand new battery in my boat, and am trying to start it...after it's been sitting in storage for 2 years. engine and transmission turn fine, nothing stuck or froze up. Starter may be bad...Anyway....when I connect the battery, everything in the boat works, gauges, lights, horn, tilt/trim, etc...when I turn the starter key..everything goes dead, then if I wait for 5-10 minutes or so..OR disconnect and reconnect the battery, everything will have power again. Is there some sort of resettable fuse, or relay or something that could be bad?

Thank for any help.

You installed a brand new battery two years ago. Is it charged? Did you keep it on a battery maintainer? You just can't let a battery sit unused for 2 years and expect it to work.

I think he means the battery is new but the boat was sitting for 2 years.

But I agree, sounds like the battery is flat. Charge up the battery and/or take it to an auto part store to have them load test it.

Gotwhat is right....the boat sat in storage for 2 years..fully winterized, covered, etc. no battery. I bought a brand new Marine Starting battery yesterday. Charged it up overnight on my charger.

I connected it to the boat....all electric items like blower, horn, lights, radio, tilt and trim work...when I got to crank over the starter..everything in the boat goes dead. I wait for a few minutes and power is back.

I just am not sure what's going on.

I still suspect a flat battery. There is just enough juice to run the accessories but not enough power to turn over the starter. This is why everything goes dead when you try to start it and then the battery slowly recovers and then your accessories work again. I suggest taking it to an auto part store to have them load test it. You can also try jump starting the boat. Just make sure you do it safely.

so..I can jump start it, just like I would a car?? hook my jumper cables up to my running vehicle, and then try and fire it up?

I do not suspect a dead battery if I understand your symptoms correctly... are you saying that all the accessories are completely off after you try to start the engine. If the battery is low, then everything would be dim, but not completely off.

I would first check for bad connections, at the battery, or at the ground connection to the engine, or the main positive connection at the starter.

Guess the easiest way to find out is to check the connections and try jump starting it. If that doesn't work, further diagnosis will be needed.

rpengr- You are correct....EVERYTHING in the boat goes "out"..not just dim..but completely non functional. I then can let it set for a few minutes, and there'll be power to everything again..OR if I disconnect the battery and reconnect right away I'll have power restored as well. It's almost as if a circuit breaker "trips" and then resets type of thing. But I don't know where or if the boat has any type of "circuit breaker"..I know it's got (2) 50 amp fuses mounted to the left of the engine, just above the starter...both fuses are new and in good shape.

Sounds like it to me too. Have the battery checked. It's the easiest check before you start pulling wires.
