Four Winns 1996 Sundowner 205, 5.1fi engine (Volvo Penta)

When engine passes 2200 RPM, throttling up OR down, the engine makes a shudder *sound* - not necessarily a vibration, although there is a very slight one.

It sounds ugly to the ear, like things are rattling in there, but once at 2300 or above it purrs like a kitten. Same for anything 2100 or below.

I uploaded an MP3 audio if you want to hear it. I will admit it's not the greatest audio, but it does capture the *groan* as I throttle through. Listen for it at:

:03-:05 seconds
:09-:11 seconds
:13 seconds
:18-:21 seconds

Audio: http://home.comcast.net/~catdiary/fourwinns.mp3

Thanks!

My guess is that you have an engine diagnostic code stored in the memory. You have essentially a Ford 5.0 EFI, so any automotive OBD 1 scan tool will plug into the diagnostic port located near the ECM on the starb side of the engine. I have done this on my boat a few times already, cheap reader runs about $35.00. From there should be able to get the codes and see what sensor may need replaced. Depending on what sensor it is you can use standard Motorcraft or automotive grade parts, or could be a specific marine sensor. If you are able to get the codes post back and I can help you out with it. Very knowledgeable when it comes to the Ford EEC IV.

When is the last time the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor were changed?

Zims, thanks. Plugs, caps, wires, etc completely retolled 4 years ago. replaced with copper wiring to ensure good firing. Engine below 22 and above sounds great -- it's that transition. Ugly.

I'm wondering if anything is rattling externally on your engine. Alternator, Fuel Pump Bracket, etc. Aside from what you can see, there is also a sheet metal cover over the bottom half (front) of the flywheel. If that was loose (or rusting apart), I could see where that could rattle at 2200.

A mechanic's stethoscope could help you narrow down where the sound is coming from.
(discount auto, home depot, etc)

...and the winner is...

Gimbal bearing. She was some time past her usefulness.

Now we can cruise in peace.

Thank you everyone!
