1998 H200 4.3GL Volvo SX drive. Had the boat a few years now and while its not 'old outboard noisy' there is a definite grumble/growl that a few years ago I may have enjoyed, but having a loud profession and a cheap loud car for long drives a quiet boat seems appealing. I wasn't aware of it honestly till I started paying attention to other boats and a friend told me my boat has a very distinctive sound that is different from all the others he hears on the lake. When I pulled the drive over the winter I assumed I would find a torn exhaust bellows but it was intact. I am not going to spend a lot of time worrying about this but curious if anyone has a cure/cause or maybe this is just the way the boats were tuned in the late 90's. Runs great otherwise. |

Would you say that the sound is coming from inside the boat or behind the boat? When mine is idling at the dock, people walking up from the side cannot tell the engine is running. That's just the way I like it. The Sunsport interior acts as a pretty good sound barrier to the inside engine noise. |

behind the boat..... its very quiet at idle, touch above idle just poking around no wake zones, but opened up to go somewhere or towing things its pretty loud, I hear other boats go by more of a hum where as mine is somewhere between that and the corsa through hull headers....well no where near the through hull but she does growl....Ill try to record it next time I'm out. It is louder than the wind noise at an on plane cruise. |

That is probably normal. The V6 has a different exhaust note than the V8, it is a bit harsher and louder. On mine with 4bbl Q-Jet it howls when the secondaries open up.... |

Did you change props lately. Call me crazy, but I found that my boat has a more throaty sound to it after putting the high five on. Not sure if it is from the increased stern lift or what, but there is a definite difference. |

There is an exhaust relief port where the anode is on the SX Drive. They can be quite loud when you are almost on the plane and behind one at planning speed. Do you have a swim platform? My recently installed platform significantly magnifies the sound at certain RPM's! |

its got the extended / recessed transom area but no extended platform, new prop but same as the old prop and the noise hasn't changed, don't know what an 'exhaust tube' is opposed to the bellows, but the exhaust bellows are similar to the drive, rubber with small holes on the bottom. It makes sense that its coming from that outdrive exhaust port when it gets up on plane....and agree with Lou its probably normal. Friend of mine thought it was cool when he first heard it, different strokes. Thanks for the input |

My 1990 170 Freedom 3.0 (4 cyl) is the same way.....when it's running at the dock or Idle..its quiet as a mouse....when you hit the gas to get up on plane...it sounds like a v8 big block with performance headers. Just the way it's always been. |
