I winterized my H210 last weekend and in the process tried to change the drive oil. I couldn't get the bottom drain plug out on the outdrive. Any suggestions? I didn't pry on it too hard so as not to tear up the slot in the plug for the flat screwdriver. Thanks in advance!

It was a pretty good boating season, in my opinion, when I can take the boat out around Thanksgiving in Southwestern PA!

Are you using the largest flat blade screwdriver that physically fits in the slot?
If so, get a hammer and give it a couple of soft impacts to break the seizure.

Yes, largest flat screwdriver - it fits well in the slot. I'll try tapping again with a hammer. I might stop at Harbor Frieght to see if they have a torque multiplier that may work.......

Cordless Impact Drivers (Makita/ Bosch etc) will make light work of jobs like these.

Get a screwdriver tip that fits well. Apply some force to loosen the screw while holding the tool, and give it a tap with a hammer. Sometimes a tiny bit of valve grinding compound on the screwdriver blade will help keep the screwdriver from slipping. Good Luck.

I don't know if they are available for Merc drives but the drain plugs that BRP now sells for Evinrudes and the Cobra drives have an allen recess in them instead of a screw slot. Much easier to remove. I have been using them for the past 5 years or so....

These are great tools because the impart the torque at the same time as the impact, so the bit cannot try to climb out of the slot (and the impact also helps break the seize as Lou mentioned). I haven't tried the Harbor Freight version though.

I had the same issue getting my drain plug out of my Cobra and best thing to get is what they call a drag link socket. Basically large screwdriver tip on a 3/8 or 1/2 socket drive. Tip was little larger then the screwdriver slot but 3 seconds on the bench grinder fixed that.

Don't know if they ever made them for the Volvo SX model. I know that BRP changed the newer Evinrudes to this style drain plugs and because the thread was the same on the older and newer Evinrude lower units as the Cobra, they fit Cobras too. Nice thing is that they just come out, no worry about the slot wallowing out. If they are not available OE its possible that Sierra might make an aftermarket set....

On my old boat, I had the merc and also had issue with drive drain plug. I went the cheap brought and threw the vice grips on large screwdriver. Used one hand to force pressure on driver and other to crank on vice grips.
