Volvo-to-OBD2 adapter - worth having on hand?

I wonder if the more advanced engine troubleshooters here have an opinion on this. I have a very good quality OBD2 scan tool. Do you know if the adapter in this link would enable me to view/reset codes on a 2005 5.7GXi (which I assume is a J1587 protocol engine)?

I haven't had an engine issue in this boat yet, but if this adapter would serve that purpose, it seems like a good thing to have on hand considering the price.

I am the farthest from an advanced engine troubleshooter that you will ever run into.

But I DO have an opinion.... :wink:

Since the one you listed is for Volvo trucks, and not Volvo Penta marine applications, my uneducated guess says no, it will not work
as you had hoped. I believe Marine engines are not OBD2 compatable
Guess is based on a mechanic I had work on our 268 Vista years ago. He had to buy Volvo Penta software, and the Volvo Penta
connector to hook up to our engine and read codes and get diagnostic info. Expensive.

Again, not sure on this.

94005 is the part # you need to use.
Pretty sure your obd will not work on a marine engine

From my experience with my D4 last Summer, I am sure you are right.

An inlet manifold pressure/ temperature sensor failed ( thank goodness for online forums, which suggested it was 99% certain to be the source of my problem !).

£60 or so for the VP part. A VP bag with a Bosch part with a Bosch part number on it. Everyday Bosch sensors are around £20 or less. The Bosch number on the part does not show up on any UK Bosch dealers database. I can't think why ( I can really, well done VP!)

Thanks Cap'n and everyone. I realize the engine isn't OBD2, I was just hoping the only difference was the physical connection, especially since I've always considered the VP & Merc gas stern drives to be marinized truck engines of a sort. J1587 scanners are out there but not cheap, so my tightwad self was hoping. :mrgreen:
