I replaced the shift cable and everything went OK except now I can't go past the forward shift position. I can shift into reverse and have throttle control past the shift point and can go into neutral and into forward shift but can't go beyond the forward shift point to accelerate. Anyone have any ideas? I'm scratching my head. Pushing the detent to disengage the shift to go into throttle control works full forward and full backward. Just not forward when the shift is engaged. Removed the cable at the out-drive linkage so it would be free but no luck.

Is this an OMC control or a generic one? Because of it's an OMC one there is really only one way to hook up the cable but if it's a aftermarket one adaptable to different manufactures (Teleflex, Uflex) it is possible to hook it up wrong.
Were both the drive & control in neutral when you installed the cable?

I beleve it's an after market but original to the boat. Outdrive is an omc. In neutral when dissasembled.

It's the adjustment on your shift cable. I had a similar issue the other day when I replaced my cables.

The cable is at full stroke before the shifter has reached the full forward position, therefore not allowing your throttle to engage.

How did you correct it?

I would suggest you adjust both of the cable ends on the shift cable to the middle of the threaded end. Install on the shifter first, than on the drive. When you install the cable to the drive there should be zero tension on the cable... Adjust it so it lines up well.

Hope this helps

Should the controller stay in place , not be removed?

Keep in mind that if it's an after market shifter you can hook up the cables wrong. For example the control may push the cable to engage fwd, or it may pull it to engage fwd. This is all explained in the instructions that come with these shifters. See if you can find out the brand of shifter and Google the installation instructions.

I'm not sure I follow.

Turns out that the controller itself is faulty and is jammed. I was hoping that the cable replacement would work. Now I need to find a replacement controller.

Well, what an experiance. After all is said and done, the new cable is now working and I didn't have to replace the controller. I purchased the controller and was removing the old one when I noticed the throttle cable holder was broken at the controller. It is what happened to the shifter cable and was the reason I couldn't shift. The whole cable moved and slide out of its slot. Replacing the shifter cable was easy but I didn't notice that it was about 7/8 s of an inch short to complete the forward shift causing it to shift but not forward enough to advance the throttle. When checking the shifting i found that the forward movement was at its end when shifting forward. I moved the cable stop to the next holding position and attached the end of the cable over one hole. I did not use the original positions. It works better now than when I bought it 4 years ago.
