Hello, I'm new to this forum and new to boating. I have a 2006 FW 180 with a 3.0l VP which I've owned for about a month now. I had the kids out tubing the other day and while switching tubers I turned off the engine and ot diesled for about 2 or 3 seconds. Afterwards I could not start it. Got it home and learned about the dieseling issue...removed spark plugs, ejected water, reinstalled plugs and it started and ran. The next day I went to take it out bit the alarm would not shut off. The only thing I can find about the alarm is it's for low oil pressure however my oil pressure gauge is saying pressure is ok. Engine seems to run fine. Checked for water in the oil which there appears to be none...it's not milky at all.

Sorry for the long story just trying to give as much info as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start by having your timing checked and ensure your using the correct octane fuel.
Change your oil & filter regardless what the dipstick looks like. It will likely be contaminated!

I figured I'd start with an oil change as well. Thanks for the input.

Thanks again for your advice. I changed the oil...had to change it 5 times to get all the water out. It didn't look milky on the dips tick but sure did when I pumped it out. Every oil change the alarm seemed to get quieter bUT didn't quit until the last oil change. The book says the alarm is only for low oil pressure which never seemed to change but I'm wondering if it somehow tells if there's water in there or something. Oh well it works.

Regarding the "dieseling" check the spark plugs for carbon buildups (they can hold hot spots after ignition cutoff). Also check that the correct spark plugs are installed.

Also, if you come off a plane and immediately shut off the engine, you can get dieseling. Always try to idle at least 10 seconds before cutting the ignition.

You're welcome.
Be sure to take the boat for a good 1+ hour run to evaporate the remainder condensation in the engine.
Get your dieseling issue sorted, or you'll be doing this again! :P

Had the same problem when the boat was newish. Mechanics couldn't find anything wrong. Four Winns replaced the wiring loom.

Several things can cause the dieseling including running too rich, burning oil, timing off or as simple as bad or low octane fuel. Can be other things but those are ones I know about. Easy one is running higher octane gas.

High octane fixed my problem....never saw it again once I started using the good stuff.

For the alarm, I used to have an intermittent alarm after higher speed runs - oil was fine, temps were fine...so I disconnected the harness at the ignition module and re-connected it. I've never had a problem since.

I do notice that when i fill up at the street pumps (not marinas) if i don't add any restore treatment for Ethanol to my tank i will get dieseling as well. once that's added it stops. i also have a carb not injected. Hope that helps

I run 87 octane E10 all the time (with no additives). You really shouldn't need a higher octane if you have the right spark plugs.

Just a thought. ...i ran across a 2006 Volvo Penta service bulletin identified by Group 20-0 Number 11 Version 3... apparently dieseling was an issue with 3.0s with lower octane fuels. The bulletin addresses timing adjustment for range of serial numbered engines.

Or....is this is the issue just use the premium and get benefits of additional injector cleaners etc too. Many comments about this worth use of less than 89 octane.
