my 5.0 Merc had that on the sundowner. It was a blue knob that you turned and all of the water came out of the manifolds. I used it late and early in the season when i was worried about freezing temps. I don't see why Volvo is just getting into technology? I also appreciated the oil drain on the Merc. There was a hose that came out of the drain plug hole with a chain attached to it. Open the small valve, and presto, old oil drained out without any mess inside the bilge! I miss both of these features!

I like it, but I would definitely want to see how it is plumbed before relying on it in overnight freezing temps out of concern for scale impeding a proper drain. Together with closed cooling it could really make late season boating a more realistic option. If my boat had that, I might even leave my boat in the garage all year instead of winterizing and storing in the barn for the winter.

Good to see closed cooling become standard. Now if VP would develop their own version of Mercruiser's dry-joint exhaust, boating would be even easier (and cheaper).

I am not a fan of these single point drain systems because:
When cast iron corrodes rust particles flake off and will clog drain lines.
If the engines used aluminum blocks and heads like outboards when alu corrodes it builds up a self protective layer it does not make flaking rust particles.
As long as I have been a back yard boat mechanic I will never understand why manufacturers and owners fight reality and refuse to install the cooling system that GM intended these engines to have!
Raw water cooling does not make sense in cast iron engines!!!

Agreed Lou, that's why I fitted/ had fitted the closed cooling system on my two 5.7 Volvos.

It's a shame though that the VP setup wouldn't protect the "consumable" manifolds and risers. Expensive in Europe at least, but simple engineering tweaks by VP would have made them simple to protect from corrosion.

Now I am on a VP diesel setup; closed cooling as standard. Plus plastic parts in the cooling system that break apparently on a regular basis ( changed very 2 years in France apparently, as a routine "precaution" maintenance item). Symptom; overheating once on the plane, requiring haul out. Diesel power / EVC hasn't saved me a cent, it's almost destroyed my enjoyment of boating !

Actually a guy on the baylinerownersclub board figured out a way to install full closed cooling on an OMC Cobra set up, (similar to Volvo's design but with the impeller in the out drive) with 2 piece Volvo style manifolds. It is possible but takes some additional plumbing and a larger heat exchanger. When I repower my boat this summer, I'm going to look into do it myself. Not having to change manifolds every 7 years or so, is a huge savings.
