I recently bought my first boat it's a 1994 Four Winns 180 se I have been going through forums trying to learn all I can. The one thing I have come across that I cannot find an answer for is this. While checking outdrive gear oil level wth the dipstick I found that the level was above the line on the dipstick. The oil looks good slightly yellow and clear. The level is about 1/4 inch above the line. Should I attempt to bring the level down if so what is the best way to do so?

You'll probably get more help if you include the engine & drive details.

Not sure the negative impact of over filling however I would suggest they provided an upper limit for a reason.

Seeing as you refer to a dip stick I assume you are referring to a Volvo or Omc. On my Volvo drive, there is a vent screw behind the plastic shroud where the shift cable connects to he drive. This vent also acts as your max fill indicator. If you open this vent hole / remove the screw the drive will drain to the appropriate max fill level. Removing the dip stick will help the oil flow quicker. If you are having a hard time locating the vent screw, just remember that the bottom of the vent hole will be at the same elevation on the drive as the max fill line on the dip stick.

Happy boating!

Is the drive level when you are checking the oil? this could throw off the reading.

It's fairly level and there are no numbers I can read on engine or outdrive. The top of the drive is flat so I'm pretty sure it's a Cobra and not the Volvo sx version. There is a label on inside of valve cover but it faded pretty bad.

Model 502APRJVB I think that's what it says
