Hopefully useful to someone who buys a boat with such engines/ drives in the future. There is a plastic elbow in the cooling system, mounted on the drive, that is known to fail; so air is sucked in rather than water. Failure is so common that it is changed on a routine preventative maintenance item every 2 years in the South of France apparently!

It can be changed without removing the drive. Two T45 Torx bolts . You can't use a standard Torx key or a Torx bit in a socket/ driver as there is no clearance to get one in. Solution; Grind down the 10mm hex Torx bit so enough of the "Torx" end is still there and cut/ grind off the other end so there is still enough 10mm hex for a ratchet spanner (wrench) to locate onto. I always needed an excuse to buy a ratchet spanner set !

On my boat, the elbow hadn't failed; the hose had fallen off as the clamp was in the wrong place ( from when VP dealer fitted driveshaft bellows !)
