I think the gxi has a rollerized drive train. This gives it a higher WOT.

Right, and slightly different ECM programming.

Hmm, good question. I would think so, but I'm not sure.

I asked the mechanic who gave us our test ride while we were deciding on four winns boat purchase this very question. He said the gxi is a "hotter" cam if you will. He also mentioned limited or no performance gains between the two.

That depends on the two specific engines you compare. Marine standards say that any engine can be within +/- 10% of it's published HP and still be "within spec." So the GXi can be anywhere from significantly hotter than a Gi, down to even less than a Gi, depending on the specimens.

I'm not convinced that the cam is actually different. Although, it might be. I can tell you that when the GXi is running on muffs at home, the rumble is enough to bring all the neighbors outside 8) .

The 5.7GXi I have now has a significantly louder exhaust than the previous 5.7GSi I had; I put this down to the earlier engine having an exhaust hose connected to both the transom and outdrive, whereas the GXi has that short stub rubber exhaust hose connected to the transom only. It gets significantly louder as the drive is trimmed out, exposing the outlet more. I also suspect the ESP is magnifying the sound ( I must be getting old, I preferred the quieter exhaust !)

I don't actually notice much difference in performance; if anything, the old 225 with the GSi was slightly faster on top end than the 245 with the GXi. That might just be down to a higher weight ( not mine!)

Regards,

Graham

That's probably right. There's nothing inherently different between the two engines that would cause one to be louder.

How about GSI? According to FW, I have a 7.4L GSi/DP - It produces 385 HP compared to the 8.1L GI/DP which only produces 375 HP. What makes the GSI produce more HP?

The same marketing department that decided last year's 280hp Gi is now 300hp, and last year's 320hp GXi is now 330hp  :|
