Hello collective brain trust.
I have a 2000 268 vista w/5.7 VP. I'm getting a lot of belt dust on the white step that covers the AC pump. So it is between the alternator and the power steering pump. i've remove and cleaned the pulleys, but cant find any reason as to why im getting this. Both are original, i have checked to see if something has gotten loose, replaced the belt with genuine VP belt, tried belt dressing. But unable to find the cause. Both pulleys spin fine and there are no chirps or anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks Jeff.

You might try a laying a straight edge (ruler or???) up against the front face of 2 pulleys at a time to see if an accessory is out of alignment. This is not common, but might be possible especially if something was replaced with the wrong part and/or not mounted correctly. Have you tried running the boat with minimal electrical load to see if less dust is produced with a lower load on the alternator. How is the belt tension? These engines use a spring loaded belt tensioner. Does this provide adequate tension to keep the belt from slipping? What type of a finish is on the pulley surfaces that contact the belt? Is this surface sanded to the point it is wearing the belt? Hope this helps.

Thank you Surface. Ill look into the alignment, I'm thinking more of the alternator is possibly failing since where the dust is accumulating, starboard that covers the AC pump and some on batteries. The alternator is original too, so maybe the bearing is failing.
