Post subject: | Ignition timing tune-up OMC 4.3GL 1995 |
Hello, I'm working on my 1995 OMC Cobra 4.3GL at the moment. I try to tune-up the ignition timing of this engine. I have the seloc and the clymer manual. I don't know why, but the give two different timings. Clymer calls for 5° ATDC, Seloc for 5° BTDC with 86-88 octane, and 0° TDC with 89 octane gas. Volvo Penta 0° TDC. Does someone has the original workshop manual for this engine and can give me the right values? BTW I'm used to the procedure with the shunt. |

I don’t have a manual for that model year but I can tell you that the older models like mine were timed at 6*BTDC if using premium gas and 1*BTDC if using regular. Since you have a joint venture product the engine and specs should be the same as a Volvo Penta model of the same year. |

hey, thanks for the reply. here we have gas with 95 octane. Are the 6°BTDC with that timing tool (V/P no. 885163), or without? |

Well the 6* BTDC, should be set before any ignition advance starts, so it I'm thinking it should be with the timing tool hooked up. I have an ancient Prestolite points distributor with mechanical advance. I have always set mine initial timing at 6* and used premium gas and never had a problem with detonation or pinging. |
