I have a few spots on my outdrive where the paint came off. There's a little bit of bubbling towards the top as well. Overall it's in good shape.

Can I just sand, prime with zinc and then touch this up with engine enamel, or do I need some kind of special outdrive paint from VP? The main thing is getting the paint to stick, avoiding corrosion and matching the color.

Hello,

last year my outdrive (OMC SX) had to be repainted.
There a some outdrive paints available on the market. I tested the paint and the primer from Quicksilver and the VP on aliminium plates. I put them into a water barrel for three month. After that time I recognized, that all plates got bubbles underneath the paint. After internet research I found out, that the one-component acrylic enamel paint are not very long lasting, when they stay permanent under water.
I think just for touch up they are okay on an outboard drive.

I switched to a two component epoxy primer and a two component polyurethane paint with a UV resistant hardnener.

This year the boat stays the whole season in the water and the SX looks still like new painted.

As a conclusion, the one component spray paints are just good for touch up if its a trailerd boat.
If the boat is in the water for the whole season, you should use stronger paints.
