"Newbie question":
How best to replace the gear lube? My manual says open the drain plug, open the dip stick plug, open the fill plug next to the shift mechanism. Then put the drain plug back and fill (slowly) from the fill hole next to the shift mechanism not the dip stick fill.
But most everyone with an outdrive or outboard fills from the drain hole with an adaptor. (I quess to keep air out?)
How do you do it?
Thanks

I pump it from the bottom up. Once it comes out of the fill hole I put it's plug back in, give about 7 more pumps, screw down the dipstick plug and quickly replace the drain plug. Always gets me to the middle point of the dipstick.

If you fill it from the top down you will need to tip the drive up and down several times to help remove the any trapped air.

I'm surprised the manual says that, larry. I agree with Jvalich, fill from bottom until it just comes out of the plug next to the shift mechanism, then our manual says to put both the lower and middle plugs back in and fill the remaining small amount, if needed, thru the dipstick
