Hello, Just wondering what other 220 owner were running for a prop and if anyone is using a 4 blade Piranha? The Piranha's seem to be getting great reviews. Currently on the boat is a 3 blade Aluminum 14.5 x 19 and the range is pretty good. It really has nothing to do with the prop itself. Move weight forward, thus less bow rise, you'll plane out at a slower speed. Switching from a three blade to a four blade will give more bow lift. Adding pitch and the extra paddle will reduce Engine RPM at WOT, and may not contribute to a higher top end. four blades will usually give you more hole-shot, but adding pitch may negate that. Looking at your boat/engine setup, I personally think you are just a little under-powered for your weight.... but this is coming from an SS owner. Thanks for your input. Being more accurate, when i said "Would be nice to get a little slower minimum plane speed" I really meant maintaining plane with a lower RPM - to hopefully be a little more fuel efficient. Is that a possibility going to a four blade? |

If you are trying to only cruise at a low plane speed with lower RPM, than a slightly higher pitch prop may be all you need. Keep in mind, this may get your motor out of the power band before hitting enough RPMs to get on plane, and may play havoc when loaded with Pass/fuel. If you are hitting/not exceeding WOT RPMs at WOT, then I wouldn't change. If you are trying to get more hole-shot for water sports and such, a slightly lower pitch, or same pitch with a 4-blade would be a route to go. A boat is by no means economical... My last boat had a V-6, and averaged about 4 mpg! |

IMHO, a 4 blade is a complete waste. If you're looking for better lower end speeds and holeshot for watersports, then a 5-blade stainless steel prop is best. If you're just looking to improve lower end speeds for planing purposes, I'd say stick with the 3-blade and do one of two things: 1. same pitch, but stainless instead of aluminum (less flex) 2. stay with aluminum, but increase pitch to 20 or 21. |
