Do these big block engines really take 9 quarts of oil? I looked at my dip stick and it is showing low about 2 quarts. I looked at my bill from when I winterized and had the oil changed and they put in 7 quarts of 20/40 oil. Is 9 right? Shouldn't I be running a straight 30 weight? What is the correct answer for the oil in my motor? |

Seloc doesn't even show a 7.4L for 2001. However, the 8.1L does have a capacity of 9 quarts, so it may be safe to assume that's what they used for all big blocks. |

Not sure about the number of quarts for your 7.4...I am running the Royal Purple SAE 30 though. I'm pretty sure you have a few options about the weight oil you use though. |

Yes, mine takes 9. Nice $100+ oil change even doing it myself. |

Wow. That's a lot of oil. The 8.1 and 7.4 block are the same so I guess I'm two quarts low. |

You don't HAVE to use the 20/40 or 25/40 synthetic that your dealer wants to use and charge you for upon each oil change. There should be a chart in your owners manual that lists the different types of oils, from top to bottom, as they are "preferred" by the manufacturer. However, you could use the type on the very bottom of the list and still comply with the terms of the warranty. If my engined took 9 quarts, I can tell you that the manufacturer's brand of 25/40 synthetic would NOT be my 1st or 2nd choice in oils. Holy CRAP that would be an expensive oil change. |

My '99 7.4 takes 9 qt. I use straight 30 w Penzoil. The 8.1 in my GMC HD just takes 6qt. |
