Why did my penta single prop have a cotter pin, but my dual prop does not? - thanks Ryan |

Just a different method of retaining the props. Duoprops are held on by a pair of large nylon stop nuts. The condition of the nylon should be monitored and the nuts replaced if/when the nylon wears to the point where the nuts don't tighten securely. Ideally, the two props should both be torqued with a torque wrench, but few people do it. The most common Duoprop wrench has no provision to attach a torque wrench: If you want to "do it right," you'll need a 1/2" drive torque wrench, a 30mm socket for the rear prop, and one of these for the front prop (part #3855876-3): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/volvo-pe ... enameZWDVW Proper torque values are: Front: 45 Ft-lbs. Rear: 50 Ft-lbs. But as I said, very few people do anything other than get them "real tight." However you do it, make certain to grease the prop shaft before installing the props!! Volvo does sell a specific prop shaft grease, for around $20 for a large tub. Just about any grease will work, but I like this grease because it seems to be non-toxic. |

the inner nut i made a tool for and it did have nylon, but the outer nut (30mm) is just a nut, no nylon at all. it looks like it would never of had any. |

What year boat? I've used a McGard prop lock on mine almost since it was new, so maybe I'm not remembering correctly. I thought the stock nut had a nylon insert. I'll look at mine. |

OK, yeah, it should be the same as mine, which I just checked. The stock nut has a strip of black nylon at the rear (non-tapered) end of the nut. If you don't have that nylon, I'd get a new nut before using the boat again (or else the above-mentioned prop lock which takes the place of the stock nut). That little strip of nylon is the only safeguard against losing half of your $1,200 prop set. FWIW (nothing), it's always been my opinion that the Duoprops should still have a cotter pin. Although the nylon shouldn't even be necessary if the props are torqued correctly, there's just too much money there to trust a half-cent strip of nylon to be the only backup system. The McGard lock uses nylon the same way, but it's a much larger, heavier section of nylon that will take far longer to wear out. That plus the locking feature make it a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. |
