Having trouble with fuel system on 1998 Volvo Penta 5.0Gi Petrol Sterndrive. The mechanic replaced a faulty low pressure fuel pump with a new one, he now reports one injector dumping huge amounts of fuel into system. He is saying that its not possible to just replace the faulty injector, he will have to replace the 8 injectors as one unit (metering unit he calls it) at a cost of 527GBP + tax = 1,100USD. As I don’t know a thing about engines, and my next nearest dealer is hundreds of miles away, I was hoping someone might be able to verify this? :? :? :?

5.0 1998 Gi: I think your engine has probably throttle body injection. there aren't 8 injectors, just 2 injectors in the throttle body; like a carburettor really.

Sounds like he wants to charge you to change the whole throttle body assembly;

VP UK prices, usually price mechanics indicate is VP "list price", but they get at least 23% discount , but you pay full amount!

Not so far away, in Chester!

Would this be the part my mechanic is talking about?

Yes,

That looks like it is the throttle body injection unit.

Did the dealer tell you that your engine had 8 injectors or did you assume that cause you had a V8?

Walter

Yes you are right

His words were " one injector is sticking open yet the other is ok"
I will have heard that as "the others are ok" :oops:

If he is replacing the whole throttle body assembly with new parts that seems reasonable. The TB alone is probably close to $1k USD at least here in the states.

Seems like it could be overhauled for a lot less money. But that's easy for me to say, I've never done it or had it done.

UPDATE

When the mechanic tried to order the throttle body from the US, the supplier said it could take quite a while to get one, so even though it's not normally a servicable part he managed to strip it down enough to un-sieze the solonoid. He replaced the unit, did an oil change, new plugs, and the engine's running like a dream.
So all is well :P "until I get the bill"
:cry:
