I accidently bumped the stern drive when backing into my slip. It wasn't a hard bump but was enough to cause the boot and exhaust pipe to separate and it started to leak water. I can see a 1/4 inch bare spot around the exhaust pipe where the boot covered once before. Can I loosen the boot and push it down on the exhaust pipe or will that cause the exhaust pipe to move where it is connected at the transom? I can't reach where it is attached to the transom.

Are you referring to the exhaust system inside the boat, between the engine and transom or the exhaust system outside the boat, between the outdrive and transom?

Alex,

There are 4 rubber hoses on the exhaust of a VP V8, 2 each side.
On each side it goes:
Riser outlet- hose- plastic elbow pipe- hose- pipe ( which combines the exhausts from both sides and is bolted onto the transom, with an O ring seal). From your description, it sounds like it's one of the hose connections to this last pipe that has moved/ now leaks.

Each of those rubber hoses has 4 stainless hose clamps, 2 each end. It's quite surprising the hose end, which ever one it is, could have moved unless the clamps were slack. I'd be tempted to slacken the clamps off and remove the hose to have a look, in case the pipe it's attached to is damaged Repositioning the hose is very unlikely to affect the integrity of the attachment/ seal at the transom, assuming the impact didn't cause damage already. I'd also check how tight the other hose clamps are!

Thanks Graham. I have her in the driveway, cleaning her up from a trip to Lake Huron and will take a closer look.
